Vrouw die over haar schouder de camera in kijkt

Marina Mascarell Martinez

Marina Mascarell Martinez completed her dance training at the Instituto Superior de la Danza Alicia Alonso of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, where she then did a master Scenic Arts.

She was a dancer with Cedar Lake Dance in New York and Nederlands Dans Theater II where she danced in works by Jírí Kylián, Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Lightfoot-León, Johan Inger, Alexander Ekman and Medhi Walerski, among others.

In 2008 Mascarell made her first choreography for the NDT Workshop: The Ice History. It was performed at the CaDance festival in The Hague. From 2011 to 2021 she was resident choreographer at Korzo Theater and since 2018 she has been an Associated Artist at Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona. In addition to her independent work, Mascarell also creates pieces for institutions such as GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, the Lyon Opera Ballet, Skanes Dansteater, Dance Forum Taipei and Nederlands Dans Theater. She also frequently collaborates with fellow artists in the fields of visual arts, film, music and theatre.

At first sight, Marina Mascarell's work is very poetic. At the same time, it always clearly has a certain fighting spirit. She likes to work with 'rebellious' bodies that question 'the norm' and is politically and socially active. For Mascarell, the dancing body is a form of resistance.

In addition to her work as a choreographer, Marina Mascarell has developed a teaching practice. Her method focuses on movement research and increasing body awareness. She gives workshops at festivals, institutions and schools.

Marina Mascarell was Outstanding Dancer in the Madrid Choreography Competition in 2005 and won a scholarship to the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina the same year. She also won several international awards for her work Discovering Secrets. She won the BNG Dance Prize in 2015.
