TWOOLS 6

The eleven highly varied dance pieces assembled in a single programme for TWOOLS 6 reflect Scapino Ballet Rotterdam's desire to give space to risk and to the full breadth of the dance field. Pieces of different lengths, sizes, styles and atmospheres, which are not normally readily combined, are again juxtaposed in TWOOLS 6. A serious ten-minute solo is followed by a flashy two-minute group piece. Strange collisions may occur', writes Scapino in the press release, 'but the sum of the parts may also produce something new'.

Resident choreographer Nannine Linning is the winner of the Philip Morris Art Prize 2004. The jury called her choreographies 'clear, aesthetic constructions'. For TWOOLS 6, her fourth time in this format, she lives up to that statement again with the solo Christal Delight danced by Nicole Kohlmann, and Hightide, a piece for eight women to the intense rhythms of Nine Inch Nails' song The Perfect Drug.

The second female choreographer in the company this year also makes an impression. Part of Sacha Steenks' three-part My Head Was My House (And I Did Not Touch The Door) is a series of drawings in the foyer, encased in ice blocks. The ice melts during the performance and leaves behind water circles and text which, when leaving the room, form the third part of this work that revolves around fear. The choreography forms the middle part.

Scapino dancer Douglas Bateman shows the work with which he won second prize at the International Choreographic Competition in Hannover in April of that year: Solo,o Cricles, danced by Maartje Hermans. Robert Poole's Beach Ghosts is based on a poem of his own, and has four women and two men dance the ebb and flow of memory. Massimo Molinari dances his own solo, Light.Z, with which he concludes his last season as a dancer with the company.
