Scapino appeals

The inhumane conditions, violations of international humanitarian law and ongoing genocidal violence worldwide - particularly in Gaza - fill us with deep concern and sadness. The human suffering affects us deeply. And we feel a responsibility to respond to this.

As a cultural institution, we have no influence on the political and military situation in Gaza or Israel. What we can do is use our art to contribute to connection, dialogue and reflection. That is our responsibility and strength. We see it as our core mission to connect people and communities through art, where violence, exclusion and polarisation occur. For us, art is a place of encounter and conversation – a space where different perspectives can coexist. A boycott would mean closing doors instead of opening them, which is contrary to our belief that exchange and cooperation are essential for mutual understanding and sustainable change.

This does not mean that we are indifferent to the suffering in Gaza or elsewhere in the world. On the contrary. We choose to make our voice heard through our work: through stories, imagination and encounters that evoke empathy and bring people into conversation with each other. We believe that this is the most powerful contribution we can make as a dance company.

Scapino Ballet Rotterdam calls on the cabinet to take decisive action and believes that the Netherlands must do more to stop the genocidal violence in Gaza. We endorse the call on the Israeli government to immediately end the suffering of civilians in Gaza. We hope that art can continue to function as a bridge, not as a weapon in a battle. That is why Scapino remains committed to connection, dialogue and compassion – values that are now more important than ever.
