Ed Wubbe wins Golden Swan dance award
Ed Wubbe, artistic director of van Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, has been awarded the Golden Swan award. The decision was announced last Friday by the Vereniging van Schouwburg- en Concertgebouwdirecties (VSCD) during the Dutch Dance Days in Maastricht. The VSCD awards the Golden Swan, the Oscar of Dutch dance, a prize awarded to dance professionals who have made a significant contribution to Dutch dance.
This year marks Ed Wubbe’s 25th anniversary as artistic director of Scapino. Under his leadership, Scapino has evolved into a daring, experimental contemporary company and one of the taste-makers of Dutch dance. In 2016, to celebrate Scapino’s 70th anniversary, Wubbe created TING!, Scapino’s biggest-ever production, in collaboration with the Dutch pop group The NITS. Wubbe pushes the boundaries of dance, creating a theatrical world featuring musicians, opera and theatre artistes empowered with a raw, vivid and contemporary relevance. As artistic director, he invests heavily in new choreographers and debuts their work on major stages.
The jury believes that Ed Wubbe is one of the most versatile Dutch choreographers, and has been a key figure in the Dutch dance world for many years. “Wubbe has a unique talent for uniting different worlds and creating fluid transitions. With an eye for new talent – which he features prominently in his company – again and again, Wubbe searches for new ways to enrich dance, and share it with a broad audience. But without ever sacrificing the superb quality of his work. A true champion of the discipline, unique of his kind,” say the jury.
After the award of the prize, Scapino shares a taster of Wubbe’s latest production, Scala, which premieres on 7 December. Scala is the sequel to Pearl, Wubbe’s baroque sensation of 2012. In theatrical costumes, and with live music by Combattimento and two opera singers, Scala unfolds in a superbly designed operatic staging.
